About Malalcahuello-Nalca National Reserve

Spanning over a diverse landscape in the Andes foothills of Chile’s Araucanía Region, Malalcahuello-Nalca National Reserve encompasses lush native forests, volcanic peaks, and pristine rivers. Established to conserve the unique ecosystems of the southern Andes, this reserve includes parts of the Chilean temperate rainforest, dominated by ancient lenga and coigüe trees. Key geographical features include the Tolhuaca and Lonquimay volcanoes, which offer dramatic, snow-capped summits and fertile soils that support endemic plant species. The area is home to medically and culturally significant flora, as well as abundant wildlife such as pudu deer, Andean foxes, and various bird species including the elusive Magellanic woodpecker. Recreational activities abound, from extensive hiking trails that loop through forested valleys and volcanic remnants to winter sports facilities around Lonquimay, which attract skiers and snowboarders during the colder months. The reserve also offers fishing in cold mountain streams and opportunities for horseback riding and mountain biking along established routes. Its relative remoteness and well-preserved environment make it a favored destination for those seeking wilderness experiences without the heavy crowds found in more famous national parks. Visitors can explore the Nalca sector’s native flora or relax in natural hot springs nearby. Malalcahuello-Nalca combines striking volcanic scenery with the verdant beauty of temperate forests, offering a diverse and memorable outdoor experience year-round.
